How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Long-Distance Transport

April 9, 2026

Getting Your Vehicle Ready

Shipping your vehicle across the country requires some preparation to ensure a smooth and safe transport experience. Here are the essential steps every vehicle owner should follow before handing over their keys.

1. Clean Your Vehicle Inside and Out

A clean vehicle makes it easier to document its current condition. Wash the exterior thoroughly and remove personal items from the interior. This helps both you and the transport company identify any pre-existing damage.

2. Document Everything

Take detailed photos of your vehicle from all angles before transport. Note any existing scratches, dents, or other damage. This documentation serves as your baseline for comparison upon delivery.

3. Check Fluid Levels and Battery

Ensure your vehicle has about a quarter tank of gas — enough to load and unload but not so much that it adds unnecessary weight. Check that the battery is charged and all fluids are at proper levels.

4. Remove Personal Items

Transport insurance typically does not cover personal belongings left in the vehicle. Remove all personal items, aftermarket accessories, and anything that could shift during transport.

5. Disable Alarms

If your vehicle has an aftermarket alarm system, make sure to disable it. This prevents unnecessary disruptions during loading, transport, and unloading.
